Karunya Sangha Vedi Kochi organized a Palliative Day observance on January 15 at the Animation Hall of Santom Parish, bringing together bedridden patients, their caregivers, members of the organization, and well-wishers. A variety of programmes were arranged with the aim of making the day truly joyful and memorable for everyone present.
The inaugural session began at 10:00 a.m. and was formally inaugurated by Kochi Municipal Corporation Mayor Mrs. V. K. Minimol. In her inaugural address, the Mayor stated that the Kochi Municipal Corporation would give special consideration to identifying, in every division within its jurisdiction, those who are bedridden and suffering pain due to various illnesses, and to ensuring that they receive comfort, care, and essential support.
The meeting was presided over by Mr. P. T. Boniface, President of Karunya Sangha Vedi. Playback singer Mr. Pradeep Palluruthy attended as the chief guest, and his musical performance was especially touching. Dr. Thomas Maliyekkal, recipient of the Star of Italy Award, delivered the Palliative Day message. Dr. P. B. Prasad offered guidance on palliative care and noted that, since death is an inevitable truth for every human being, bedridden patients should also prepare themselves mentally.
During the ceremony, (Retd.) Major Mr. R. Rajesh inaugurated the distribution of food kits, and Mrs. Tiny Thomas Cochery inaugurated dialysis support distribution. Speeches were delivered by Councillors Mrs. Lissy Sumi and Mrs. Sumith Joseph, General Secretary Mr. P. G. Lawrence, Treasurer Mr. Sebastian Bernard, Vice President Mrs. T. P. Sophia, Palliative Convenor Mrs. Joyce Antony, Programme Coordinator Mr. P. P. Jacob, and Mrs. Mary Lissy, Antony Palluruthy, Mrs. T. J. Jain, Mrs. Lilly Antony, among others. To uplift the spirits of all attendees, various cultural programmes were presented. At the venue, food kits worth ₹1,000 were distributed to palliative patients, dialysis support was provided to kidney patients who require dialysis, and financial assistance for treatment was given to three individuals. The cultural programmes continued even after lunch, and more than 140 people took part in the event.
